Our season-opening concert commemorates the life of former Gorton Philharmonic violinist Francis Scott Burns (1824-1915), with an evening of music written in the Austro-Germanic tradition, which emphasizes musical architecture and the capturing of a heroic or tragic character. The concert is centred around Brahms’ beautiful and popular Violin Concerto in D, which was written for virtuoso Joseph Joachim and was a particular favourite of Francis. The scene will be set with Mendelssohn’s beautiful overture from his incidental music for Jean Racine’s play Athalie. The evening concludes with Franck’s Symphony in D minor, which combines Austro-Germanic symphonic architecture with a French concern for colour and supple melodic lines.
