Our Winter Concert will be an evening in memory of long-time Gorton Philharmonic clarinettist Richard Fairbank, featuring the orchestra’s current Principal clarinettist and long-time friend of Richard’s, John Gibson, performing Bassi’s Concert Fantasy on motives from ‘Rigoletto’ (composed by Verdi, who died 125 years ago). The first half of the concert will open with the popular overture to Ethel Smyth’s opera The Wreckers, premiered 120 years ago, and end with a favourite work of Richard’s and his family – Finlandia by Sibelius. The evening will conclude with another favourite work of Richard’s, Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor, composed 120 years ago.
